THE US Ambassador to Russia Joe Sullivan is expected to return to the United States within a week for “consultations”, amid rising tensions in US-Russian relations, the US embassy in Moscow announced on Tuesday (20/4).

On Friday, the Kremlin urged the US diplomat to go to the United States.
Russia’s ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, was recalled for consultations in Moscow on March 17, when US President Joe Biden called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin a “killer.”
However, Jake Sullivan assured that “he will return to Moscow in the coming weeks, before a possible meeting between Biden and Putin.”
The meeting has been on the agenda since last week, following a proposal by Joe Biden in which Moscow said it was open. Such a summit on neutral ground is a possibility being considered, according to the Kremlin.
Tensions in US-Russian relations are high due to the situation in Ukraine, the treatment of the opposition Alexei Navalny by the Russian authorities, and accusations of Russian espionage, Russian involvement in the presidential election and the large-scale US cyber attack in 2020.
The United States announced on Thursday additional sanctions package against Russia, including the deportation of 10 Russian diplomats and a ban on the purchase of Russian bonds by US banks
Russia responded by deporting ten US diplomats, making threats against Washington-funded NGOs and barring members of the Biden government from entering Russian territory.
