The US is concerned about Hungary’s relationship with Russia and consider the prime minister’s decision “problematic”. Viktor Orban to meet with the Russian president Vladimir Putin, as reported today by the American embassy in Budapest. Orban held a bilateral meeting with Putin on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing.
He is the only leader of his country The European Union who participated in the forum or who has met Putin since Russia invaded the Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
“The US is concerned about Hungary’s relationship with Russia,” US Ambassador to Hungary David Pressman said in a statement. Earlier this week, Pressman said in a post on Platform X: “Hungary’s leader chooses to stand by a man whose forces are responsible for crimes against humanity in Ukraine, and alone among our Allies.” Hungary, which is also a member NATO, has opposed many EU initiatives to support Ukraine in its resistance to Moscow’s forces while sourcing most of its crude and gas from Russia. Orbán told Putin during their meeting in Beijing that Hungary has never wanted to oppose Russia and is trying to save bilateral relations. After the meeting with Orbán, the ambassadors of the NATO countries and Sweden, who are accredited in Budapest, gathered to discuss their concerns about Hungary’s rapprochement with Moscow, as reported by Radio Free Europe, reports APE- BE.
The prime minister’s chief political adviser, Balas Orban, dismissed the US criticism in a post on platform X earlier this weeksaying that Hungary is “tired” of the “hypocrisy” of the American ambassador.
