“We are working with other countries on a proposal that we hope will lead to the restoration of calm and allow them to hold talks on a diplomatic solution” in Lebanon, Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood said during the emergency meeting Security Council on the crisis. “We urge the Security Council to lend its support to this diplomatic effort in the coming days,” he added. Acting Ambassador Wood expressed Washington’s “deep concern” over “reports that hundreds of civilians have been killed in recent days in Lebanon,” while reiterating the American position that Israel has a right to self-defense against Hezbollah attacks. He considered that UNSCR 1701 is the only way to permanently end this cycle of escalation and return people who have been forced to leave their homes on both sides of the Israel-Lebanese border.
