The US opens a “window” for negotiations on the Ukrainian border

The door is half-open to possible negotiations on its borders Ukrainian in the future it seemed to leave the head of American diplomacy Anthony Blinkenhastening to add that it is up to the Ukrainians to decide.

Speaking before a congressional committee yesterday (Thursday 23/3), Anthony Blinken stressed that any peace deal with Russia must be “fair and sustainable”, that it would respect Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity, but “we are waiting for the Ukrainians to tell us how it will be specifically defined on the ground”.

He seemed in this way to acknowledge the fact that the Ukrainians will have a hard time recapturing all the territory Russia has annexedespecially the Crimean peninsula.

“The Ukrainians are determined to fight for some areas”

“I think that there are areas in Ukraine for which the Ukrainians are determined to fight, and there are probably areas that will decide that they should try to recover by other means,” he said, as reported by the Athens News Agency.

The US secretary of state was specifically responding to Republican politician Chris Stewart’s question about whether the US stands by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s promise to retake Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

The head of American diplomacy, who considers that today the necessary conditions for peace negotiations do not exist, insisted that “these are decisions that must be made by the Ukrainians”, as they concern “how they see their future and how it will it will be translated into terms of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence”.

“What we don’t want, for the good of the whole world, is for this to be resolved (…) in a way that will allow the Russians to redeploy, rearm and attack again,” he added.

The US and Western countries do not recognize the annexation of Crimeanor areas captured by the Russian armed forces in eastern Ukraine, where heavy fighting continues.

The US-led alliance that provides military aid to Ukraine assures that it is prepared to continue supporting it as long as necessary and that the Russian military must be withdrawn from Ukrainian territory, but generally tends to be evasive when it comes to Crimea.
