US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will visit Israel next week and will have meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gandz, The news website Axios reported on Tuesday.
Lloyd Austin will be the first minister in the government of Democratic President Joe Biden to visit Israel.
The Pentagon, which maintains an aura of secrecy surrounding the Secretary of Defense’s visits to foreign countries for security reasons, has not confirmed the trip.
The two sides are expected to discuss regional issues, particularly security threats from Iran, Lebanon and Syria, according to a report by Axios.
Israel is concerned about the Biden government’s willingness to renegotiate with Iran and rejoin the international agreement on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, formally the Joint Integrated Action Plan (CIP).
