The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently pressed Twitter Inc to provide it with more information about how it detects spam accounts, stepping up scrutiny of the platform’s user count data.
The SEC’s June 15 request to CEO Parag Agrawal, made public today Wednesday, related to Twitter’s statements in its latest annual report.
The company had reported that spam and bot accounts make up less than 5% of its user base.
Twitter has come under pressure this week over how it monitors and keeps records of fake accounts, following allegations by a former executive that the company is not doing enough to tackle bot activity.
Although Twitter has denied the claims by its former security chief Peiter Zatko, some legal experts say it could strengthen Elon Musk’s position as he tries to avoid a $44 billion takeover of the platform.
