The US sees signs that Russia wants to negotiate the grain deal

The US ambassador to the United Nations wanted yesterday Tuesday to appear optimistic about the possibility of resuming talks in order to reinstate the agreement between Russia and Ukraine, mediated by Turkey and the UN, which allowed from the summer of 2022 the safe export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

“We have seen some indications that [σ.σ. η Ρωσία] may be interested in returning to talks”, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in New York, as the US assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council. “So we’ll wait and see if that actually happens.”

Asked if she saw any tangible steps being taken to bring the agreement back into force after Russia’s decision to leave it in mid-July, Ms Thomas-Greenfield said she had “not seen any evidence of that yet”.

“But I suspect that [οι Ρώσοι] they know that if they want their fertilizers to be on the market, if they want efforts to continue to find a way to make the payments they are asking for, then they will have to go back to this agreement. That’s why I continue to be optimistic, even though there isn’t much to be optimistic about.”

In one year, almost 33 million tons of grain were exported from Ukraine, which helped stabilize food prices on a global scale and averted the risk of shortages and outbreaks of famine.
