The vice president of Microsoft-owned Bethesda has apologized to PlayStation fans. Due to the exclusivity of new games

Bethesda’s senior vice president of global marketing, Pete Hines, was interviewed as part of Gamespot Play For All Live 2021, in which, among other things, he raised the topic of the exclusivity of the company’s new games. We will remind, recently presented Starfield and Redfall will be released on PC and Xbox, but will not be released on PlayStation. And this is the first confirmation that Microsoft will beat the PlayStation with its own weapon, that is, exclusives.

The vice president of Microsoft-owned Bethesda has apologized to PlayStation fans. Due to the exclusivity of new games

It wasn’t considered until the Xbox bought us, and then, as part of the Xbox, we looked at what we were doing. Starfield will be exclusive to PC and Xbox, and I think it’s only important to put it that way because Phil Spencer recently talked about how they want to expand their ecosystem by aiming to bring Xbox games to people who don’t have a Series S, X, or even PC, but who want to play the games we’re adding to Game Pass and Xbox. So, wherever and however it is implemented, the Xbox ecosystem is expanding, and we are very excited about it. You also asked how this will affect development. Well, I’m here to tell you, and any developer will tell you so, when you move to fewer platforms, your development becomes more streamlined.

Focusing always helps. The same is true for a game like Deathloop. When we decided to partner with Sony and this game became a PlayStation exclusive, this development became more streamlined.

Additionally, Hines empathized with those PlayStation fans who might feel abandoned by Bethesda’s new decisions.

I totally understand if you are unhappy, angry or anything like that. I understand that these are all real feelings and disappointments. How do you handle this, I have no idea. I would never dare to say how you can fix this and feel better. At the same time, I may not spend so much time focusing on what we are not doing. I’m trying to focus on how we make games for these other platforms and how that happens, where we are and when we’re ready to talk about it.

I don’t know how to allay the fears and concerns of PlayStation 5 fans other than to say that I am a PlayStation 5 player too and I have played games on that console and there are games that I intend to keep playing. But if you want to play Starfield it’s PC and Xbox, sorry. All I can really say is apologize because I’m sure this is upsetting people, but I can’t do much about it.

Simply put, Hines apologized to PlayStation fans, but explained the benefits for Bethesda of the exclusivity of their games. Earlier, by the way, the head of Bethesda, Todd Howard, spoke about the same benefits. But it is also clear from these comments that if it were not for the purchase of Bethesda by Microsoft, the studio’s games would be cross-platform.
