The vitamins used by stars of indefinable age like Kate Moss

To say that vitamins are good for you is obvious but it is less so, instead, to investigate which ones are beneficial to beauty. The skin (as well as the hair) benefits from some types of vitamins which, for this reason, become the best friends of the divas. Whether for topical use – therefore contained in creams and serums – or to be taken by mouth through food or supplements, these nutrients turn out to be true beauty elixirs of Hollywood and its surroundings. Jennifer Aniston she is one of the biggest fans of the “vitamin pool”.

On her Instagram profile she announced that she has become the creative director of the beauty brand she loves so much, Vital Proteins, a brand specializing in vitamin-based cosmetics.
And you want to know what one of the secrets of youth is Jennifer Lopez? No, he didn’t sell his soul to the devil but simply takes a lot of vitamin E. This ingredient is in fact present in all the products of the line JLo Beauty recently presented and, even in terms of nutrition, the diva seems to have a full fridge. The former personal chef of Lopez, Kelvin Fernandez, revealed to Us Weekly, revealing one of his allies of eternal youth: eggs, among the main sources of this nutrient. From B3 to B5, from C to D, each type of vitamin has a specific beneficial effect ranging from anti-aging action to sebum regulation.

We asked the dottoressa Elisabetta Perosino, specialist in dermatology at the Perosino Associati studio in Rome and Vice President of ISPLAD (International-Italian Society of Dermatology, Aesthetic and Oncological Plastics) to explain to us what each vitamin is used for from a dermatological point of view.

VITAMIN E, ANTIOXIDANT
«The most used in cosmetics is vitamin E, thanks to its antioxidant action which helps reduce damage from the sun, smoke and smog», explains Dr. Perosino. «Also called tocopherol, it is used topically in creams and serums for an anti-aging effect. It is also taken by mouth and we find it in legumes, some vegetables, olives, oil seeds, fish and dried fruit. It is good not to overdo the doses because, being fat-soluble, it is not eliminated through the renal system but through the liver, so it could accumulate ». Among the celebrities who can’t do without it? Kate Moss (who revealed to the British magazine InStyle that he always uses Crème de la Mer, rich in tocopherol) and Kim Kardashian. The latter has often posted on her IG profile photos of her taking the now famous multivitamin bears. These are the teddy bear-shaped tablets produced by the Sugarbearhair brand, much loved by celebrities because they invigorate the hair. The vitamin with the greatest concentration of Sugarbearhair is precisely E.

VITAMIN B3 REGULATES SEBUM PRODUCTION
“Vitamin B3, also called niacin, is water-soluble and can be taken with white meats, spinach, brewer’s yeast, tuna and fatty fish”, explains dermatologist Elisabetta Perosino, adding that in creams and serums it is mainly used as it effectively normalizes seborrhea. «Niacin is able to reduce the production of skin fat, sebum. Furthermore, like all vitamins, it has a regenerating action on the skin ». Vitamin B3 is the protagonist of Rihanna’s beauty routine so much so that all the products of her brand dedicated to skincare, Fenty Skin, contain it.

VITAMIN B5, PROTECTS THE HAIR AND REPULSES THE SKIN
«Vitamin B5, also called pantothenic acid, is a hair protector. Strengthens the bulb and protects it. It is taken by eating foods such as eggs and legumes, otherwise it can be applied topically ». There are many hair care products based on this substance, precisely because pantothenic acid significantly protects and invigorates the hair.
«Many face creams are also based on vitamin B5 because it also has beneficial effects on the skin. It plumps up the skin and at the same time has an antioxidant effect ».
The actress Olga Kurylenko, infected this summer by the Coronavirus, she updated fans on her health conditions by posting a photo of her on Instagram accompanied by the words “[…] I take vitamins and supplements […] they help […] the immune system to be stronger to fight ”and indicated B5 as the first vitamin, defining it as“ vital for living a healthy life. Like all B complex vitamins, B5 helps the body convert food into energy ”.

VITAMIN C, STIMULATES THE PRODUCTION OF COLLAGEN
«Vitamin C is an antioxidant and is water-soluble, so it does not cause accumulation problems unlike other vitamins. In autumn, it is recommended to take it by mouth to reduce the likelihood of catching the flu, ”says Dr. Perosino. «Topically, in serums and creams it is able to increase the biosynthesis of new collagen. It also modulates the production of melanin, so it is useful for combating skin spots. It turns out to be an ally in fighting free radicals thanks to its antioxidant power. It is degradable therefore in cosmetic products it must be micro-encapsulated ». Among the stars who use it most in cosmetics, there is Courteney Cox (as he revealed in an interview with NewBeauty magazine), Priah Ferguson of the TV series Stranger Things who uses the Gleamin ‘Vitamin C Clay Mask (as he told Marie Claire) and the supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio who has revealed her obsession with the vitamin C serums on its website.

VITAMIN D, TO IMPROVE BONE METABOLISM
«D is the vitamin linked to bone metabolism. Oral intake fights osteoporosis and this is also a fat-soluble substance, like all vitamins except C and D, so it is better not to take too much to avoid accumulation “. Actress Julia Garner opts for vitamin D supplements (in addition to C and magnesium), as she reveals in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. There is also vitamin D3 that the dermatologist Perosino explains to us is used in creams to treat psoriasis as it helps in pathological processes. “Vitamin D3 is found in oily foods such as fatty cheeses, butter, oysters and cod liver oil.”

VITAMIN A, STIMULATES THE DENSITY OF DERMA AND THE SYNTHESIS OF COLLAGEN
«Vitamin A has retinoic acid and retinol as biologically active forms. The topical use in serums and creams leads to a double stimulation: on the one hand that of the density of the dermis and on the other the synthesis of collagen ». Cosmetics based on this substance therefore make the skin more elastic, toned, compact and youthful, improving skin texture and complexion. It is the actress’s favorite vitamin Jennifer Garner who takes it daily on the skin by applying Neutrogena retinol oil to the face, as reported by People magazine. Instead taken by mouth through food, vitamin A could have unexciting effects on the complexion, as Dr. Perosino explains: «Vitamin A is contained in raw carrots. Eating too much can cause the skin to turn orange due to the carotenoids present. Taking vitamin A by mouth is also indicated in case of acne but be careful in pregnancy because they can cause a teratogenic effect, leading to congenital malformations and anomalies in the fetus ».

VITAMIN K, AGAINST EYE BAGS
Finally, there is K, the least known of the vitamins and for this reason still little used in cosmetics although it helps to counteract a skin imperfection that today affects many people, including stress, insomnia and an unregulated life. «Vitamin K has an anti-edema function, therefore it prevents the formation of edema. For this reason it is added to the formulations of products to treat bags and swellings around the eye », concludes the dermatologist Elisabetta Perosino.
