The war in Ukraine has increased cyber security attacks

The geopolitical developmentslike the Russian one invasion of Ukraine, caused an increase and expansion of attacks against her cyber security until last July, refers to the annual exhibition her ENISAthe agency responsible for cyber security in the European Union.

ENISA’s study follows concerns about the role of state actors and the increasing threats to governments, companies and critical sectors such as the energy, transport, banking and digital sectors.

The European agency reports that geopolitical situations -especially the Russian invasion of Ukraine – they changed the terms of the game during this time of year.

Exploiting software vulnerabilities at zero point in time before developers fix the flaws, as well as spreading disinformation and deepfakes have resulted in more malicious and widespread attacks with more damaging consequences, the report states.

“Today’s global climate is inevitably causing significant changes in the cybersecurity threat landscape. The new context is shaped by the increase in threat factors,” ENISA Executive Director Johan Lepassaar said in a statement.

As reported by APE-MPE, approx 24% of cyber security attacks targeted administrative agencies and governmentswhile 13% targeted digital service providers, the report said.

The European Union agreed in May to strengthen cybersecurity rules for critical sectors, requiring companies to assess risks, notify authorities and take countermeasures. Otherwise, they are threatened with fines of up to 2% of their total turnover.
