“The war that Vladimir Putin has is not the one that the Russian president wanted”, says Vitélio Brustolin, professor of International Relations at the Fluminense Federal University.
THE CNN Radio , he explained that at the beginning of the invasion, Putin wanted to quickly seize the Ukrainian center of gravity. “Including the capital Kiev, as well as overthrowing Volodymyr Zelensky from power and submitting the territory to his command.”
“Ukraine was armed and trained by NATO, and it is stronger now than it was on February 24,” he defended.
The professor sees the US midterm elections, which take place in November, as a “determining factor” for the war – since the country is the one that most helps Ukraine with weapons.
“Both Democrats and Republicans agree in support of Ukraine. It is an election that President Joe Biden will do anything to win, as he has only 5 House seats ahead.”
In Vitélio’s assessment, “the West and other countries in the world have nothing to do at the moment, other than economic sanction, or it would be a direct intervention in the war.”
“Sanctions do not have an immediate effect, but in the long term they do,” he added.
