«The Water We Want»: the importance of water according to the new generations

Educate for a more conscious use of water, raise awareness of its value, respect every form of water heritage, both natural and cultural. These are the themes of the new campaign The Water We Want promoted by Unesco and Global Network of Water Museums, who have decided to put the spotlight on the water emergency by entrusting young people with the task of becoming ambassadors for a more sustainable development.

The project involved the younger generations both through a competition and with the social campaign which, thanks to the 22 videos made by the Italian video maker Giuseppe La Spada, saw the participation of thousands of young people aged between 6 and 18 from 20 different countries.

Among all the drawings, photographs and videos sent, they have been selected 104 significant works and six winners.

Italy plays a central role in this project: Unesco has in fact entrusted our country with the leadership of an important global challenge, that of linking museum and non-museum institutions to promote education in a more conscious use of the precious liquid element. To realize this challenge the Global Network of Water Museums: network that aims to promote precious aquatic heritage, both natural and cultural, on a global scale.

The success achieved thanks to this first communication campaign has made it possible to launch the second edition of the competition which will see the winners participate, in 2022, in the next World Water Forum in Dakar. “The challenge taken up by the newly created UNESCO World Network of Water Museums is to stimulate virtuous collaborations between museums, educational institutions and companies by promoting them within important international projects to review current production and consumption processes.” underlines the director of the Network, Eriberto Eulisse.
