The possibility of sending correspondence and parcels with unmanned aircraft is provided for in the relevant chapter included in the draft law “Emerging information and communication technologies and other provisions” of the Ministry of Digital Government presented at the last cabinet meeting.
Specifically, the chapter, entitled “Establishing arrangements for utilizing the capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicle systems for the provision of postal services, while reducing operating shipping costs”, marks the start of drone flights by postal and courier companies.
According to his information Capital.grthe ELTA Courier appears ready to conduct this year, at a pilot level and on an island in Greece, drone flights, which will transport medical supplies.
However, in Europe, but also worldwide, where there are large postal groups or e-commerce companies, drone flights have taken place.
It is noteworthy that, just two weeks ago, the British Post announced that they want to deploy a fleet of 500 drones for parcel deliveries to remote areas.
In the US, Amazon, although trying since 2013, only received permission in 2020 from the US Civil Aviation Authority (FAA) for drone parcel deliveries.
On the other hand, executives of the postal market note that the use of drones is not expected to become widespread and that it will be “complementary”, provided that all the appropriate conditions are met.
At the institutional level, the EU last year approved the U-space package, which includes three regulations, with the necessary conditions for drone flights, while in Greece the CAA has set specific rules.
It is noted that European regulations distinguish drones based on the risk posed by their operation and not between recreational and professional activities.
