The severe cold wave has hit mainly the southern parts of the country, with the meteorological service Climatempo record snowfall or sleet in at least 43 cities.
According to the Meteorological Institute of Brazil the low temperatures are expected to continue until the beginning of August and ice may form in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Goya.
“I am 62 years old and I have never seen snow in my life”, truck driver Iodor Goncalves Marquez from Cabara do Sul told Globo TV. “It is indescribable to see the beauty of Nature,” he added.
The sharp drop in temperature and the cold wave, meanwhile, pushed homeless Brazilians to seek refuge and hot food in special structures.
