The website of the Superior Military Court suffered a hacker attack on the day of the inauguration of the president

The portal of the Superior Military Court (STM) was the target of a cyber attack on the day of the inauguration of its current president, Lieutenant Brigadier Francisco Joseli Parente Camelo, on March 16.

On that date, there was an attempt to take down the portal from the air through the action of robots that tried to overload the system with a high number of accesses.

The information was revealed by Camelo this Friday (31), during the Cyber Security Symposium of the Superior Courts, held at the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

This type of attack is called a “denial of service”. It is an attack that generates a large number of requests for a virtual service, which overloads the system and can leave it inoperative or out of order.

According to the President of the Military Court, on the day of the attack, the site recorded more than 1.8 million access requests, in an attempt to make the service unavailable and bring down the portal.

“[Foram] Requests made through robots, and our team and security systems, tools, managed to divert the attempt”, said Camelo. “It was something that shocked me a lot, but it is our reality, with regard to cybernetics.”

According to Camelo, there was an increase in the number of attempts to attack the Court’s systems. “These are numbers that scare us,” he declared.

The symposium held at the STF also includes the presence of the President of the Court, Minister Rosa Weber, the President of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), Maria Thereza de Assis Moura, and specialists in the field.

The objective of the event is to train and make Judiciary officials aware of the importance of cyber security in the courts.

In his opening speech, Weber made a parallel between cyber attacks on courts and the acts of January 8, in which the headquarters of the Three Powers were invaded and vandalized.

“The invasion of systems that exclusively aims to promote the demoralization of the judiciary apparatus does not differ in ontological terms from the physical invasion followed by the destruction of property that this Federal Supreme Court was the victim of on the fateful day of January 8”, he said, during the opening of the event. .

According to the magistrate, cyber attacks may not only involve attacks on specific documents or targeting the integrity of systems, but the “very dignity of Justice”.

The president of the STF highlighted among the virtual threats the same type of attack that the STM was targeted two weeks ago: the unavailability of service.

“Sensitive data, in this case, are encrypted, making it impossible for the systems to function regularly, often under the requirement of financial rescue”, he said.

“As a critical consequence, this situation generates, within the scope of the Judiciary, the need to suspend deadlines and judicial assistance until the service is restored, simultaneously affecting the entire community that uses the judicial service”, concluded Weber.
