The week of May recorded the highest percentage of positive dengue tests in two years

According to an analysis by the Todos Pela Saúde Institute (ITpS), 34.5% of the total dengue tests carried out between May 5th and 11th showed positive results. In the weekly analysis, this positivity percentage is the highest ever recorded in the last two years. To give you an idea, in the same period in 2023, the positivity peak was 26%, and in 2022, 20.5%. The data was obtained from approximately 500 thousand diagnostic exams carried out between May 2022 and May 2024 by the Fleury, Hilab, HLAGyn, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein and Albert Sabin laboratories.

This is the second increase in positive dengue cases in 2024. The first occurred in the first week of the year, from December 31, 2023 to January 6, 2024, and rates remained high throughout the month. This trend contrasts with that observed in previous years. In 2023, the peak of positivity in the first semester, reaching 23%, occurred in epidemiological week 15 (April 9th to 15th), while in 2022, the highest percentage, of 32%, was recorded in epidemiological week 16 (April 17th to 23rd). Of april).

Profile of positive cases

In the week ending May 11, the States presented different positivity rates for dengue. Paraná led with 41%, followed by Goiás and São Paulo, both with 38%. Minas Gerais recorded 30%, while Rio Grande do Sul had 29% and the Federal District had 21%. Mato Grosso got 5%. According to ITpS, the other States did not provide sufficient data for individual analysis, but participation in the study was relevant to have a more comprehensive view of the disease situation throughout the national territory.

With regard to age groups, the study highlights that the elderly account for the majority of positive results from tests carried out during the peak period, representing 47% of the total. On the other hand, among children under 10 years of age, lower rates are observed, with 11% of positive results for those aged 0 to 4 years and 24% for those aged 5 to 9 years.

According to virologist Anderson Brito, ITpS researcher and coordinator of monitoring reports, the data indicates that dengue outbreaks will still be a cause for attention over the next month. “Given the record positivity levels reported, exceeding 35% in some Brazilian states and in different age groups, the dengue outbreaks currently observed in the country will still be a cause for attention throughout June,” said Brito.
