The weekend should be hot and stormy in Rio de Janeiro

After a Friday (12) with heavy rain and flooding in several places, Rio de Janeiro is expected to experience heat and storms over the weekend. Instabilities associated with the formation of a low pressure system should influence the weather and cause storms, according to the Alerta Rio System. Moderate to strong wind gusts are also expected throughout the entire Rio de Janeiro territory.

For this Saturday (13), the forecast is for unstable weather with moderate to heavy rain at any time. The accumulation could exceed 25 mm/h and 100 mm/24h. Temperatures will show a sharp decline, but it will still be hot. The predicted maximum is 30oC in the capital of Fluminense.

On Sunday (14), the weather remains unstable, with a chance of light to moderate rain isolated throughout the day. The temperature should rise a little more and the maximum could reach 32oC.

On Monday (15), there will be a reduction in cloud cover and there is no forecast of rain. The heat is also expected to increase significantly, with a maximum of 35oC.

Disorders in the Metropolitan Region

This Friday (12), heavy rain caused disruption in some parts of the Metropolitan Region. The Washington Luiz Highway was flooded at Arco Metropolitano. There was closure and traffic jam. The toll plaza also had to be closed due to pockets of water, but has since been reopened. The road towards Juiz de Fora on BR-040 had 10km of congestion, mainly at Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense, and in Reduc.

The rain also hampered the operation of trains. Supervia, the concessionaire that manages the service, reported that train circulation between Gramacho and Saracuruna had been suspended.

Through social networks, residents of the municipalities of Niterói and São Gonçalo, also in the Metropolitan Region, reported several points of flooding and congestion. In images shared by internet users, Avenida Roberto Silveira, one of the main streets in Niterói, appears covered in water.

According to Niterói City Hall, sirens were activated in the regions of Pé Pequeno and Boa Vista. The city is on alert.

In São Gonçalo, the municipal administration stated that it activated the sirens in the neighborhoods of Gradim, Patronato, Sete Pontes and Engenho Pequeno. Five support points were opened by the city hall and the municipality is also on alert.

Monitoring

The State Secretariat for Civil Defense and the Rio Fire Department reported that they monitor rainfall throughout the State. Around 120 incidents related to rain have been attended to by firefighters since Thursday (11). The majority related to rescuing people and cutting down trees.

The State Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alert Center (Cemaden-RJ) is also monitoring weather conditions and rainfall levels, sending alerts to municipalities when necessary.

The agency stated that, now, the hydrological risk is high or very high in the Metropolitan, Serrana, South, Baixada Fluminense and Baixadas Litorânea regions. There is a risk of flooding and flooding in Niterói, Cachoeiras de Macacu, São Gonçalo, Nova Friburgo, Petrópolis, Cantagalo, Sumidouro, Volta Redonda, Barra Mansa, Mendes, Valença, Rio das Flores, Quatis, Piraí, Porto Real, Pinheiral, Paty do Ensign, Barra do Piraí, Duque de Caxias and Rio Bonito. In the rest of the state, the risk is moderate to low.

There is a high risk of landslides in Niterói, Cachoeiras de Macacu, São Gonçalo, Nova Friburgo, Paty do Alferes, Barra Mansa and Duque de Caxias. In the rest of the state, the risk is low to moderate.
