O announcement by the Polish government that it will stop sending weapons and other military equipment for Ukraine’s defense effort is the clearest sign that the West is beginning to tire of war in Europe.
Members of the European Union and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), the Poles are among Ukraine’s most important allies.
The country has shown strong support for Kiev since the first day of conflict, providing no less than US$4.54 billion in weapons and humanitarian and financial aid .
In terms of equipment, the Poles sent no less than 320 Soviet-era tanks and 14 MiG-29 fighters .
Furthermore, it is through the territory of Poland that passes most of the Western weapons used on the battlefield. To top it off, the country received more than 1.6 million Ukrainian refugees – putting increasing pressure on local public services.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who will contest general elections on October 15th, and comes against the backdrop of a direct clash with President Volodymyr Zelenski’s government over the export of Ukrainian grains.
Grains, which can no longer be exported through the Black Sea due to the Russian naval blockade, are flooding the Polish market and other neighboring countries – which creates pressure on local farmers.
But this is just one of the fracture elements.
O The Polish government and that of several other countries are beginning to be held accountable for the high costs of the war and the lack of significant military advancement by the Ukrainians in their counteroffensive – despite the sophisticated equipment sent by NATO.
The proximity of elections in Poland only brought forward the debate.
And the pressure on Kiev will only increase, with several other elections on the way, including the crucial race for the White House next year – which will force President Joe Biden to also justify all the billion-dollar costs of the war to the American coffers without much gains on the ground.
Further signs of Western fatigue appeared at the recent G20 Leaders’ Summit, when the United States and European countries bowed to pressure from Russia and China and agreed to issue a final statement without any direct criticism of the invasion of Ukraine.
