The wheels of the Curiosity rover are slowly turning to trash. Yesterday’s photos from Mars are depressing

The rover is mounted on six wheels, each with its own electric motor. Two front and two rear are involved in taxiing: thanks to this, the rover can turn 360 ° on the spot.

The wheels are made of aluminum – with a “tread” pattern for better grip and curved titanium springs for resilient platform support. “Legs” – from titanium pipes.

See photo: Martian Desert. What the sand-covered Curiosity rover has seen in recent days

The rover is able to overcome obstacles up to 65 cm in height and climb sand dunes with a slope of up to 12.5 °, and depending on the center of mass, it can withstand a tilt of at least 50 ° in any direction without overturning. However, to avoid accidents, the automation limits the rover’s tilt to more than 30 °.

REFERENCE… Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun in the solar system, its mass is 10.7% of the mass of the Earth. Mars is called the Red Planet because of the shade of the surface from the mineral maghemite, γ-iron oxide. Mars has a rarefied atmosphere with surface pressure 160 times less than Earth’s, and two natural satellites – Phobos and Deimos. It is the most extensively studied planet in the solar system apart from Earth.

Curiosity arrived on Mars in August 2012 and has traveled nearly 24 km since then. He is currently exploring Mount Sharp. There is such a relief:
