The White House welcomes communication between Zelensky and Xi Jinping – “The Chinese should also listen to the Ukrainians’ point of view”

THE White House announced through spokesman John Kirby that he welcomes a possible communication between him Volodymyr Zelensky and his Xi Jinpingon the subject of war in Ukraine.

Asserting that the US has long “encouraged” such contact, the spokesman stressed: “We think it is very important that the Chinese listen to the point of view of the Ukrainians and not just Putin.”

The newspaper Wall Street Journal wrote earlier this week that Xi Jinping plans to hold talks with his Ukrainian counterpart soon, in their first conversation since Russia invaded Ukraine more than a year ago. According to the newspaper, the conversation could be held after the scheduled visit next week of the Chinese president in Moscow.

Beijing has neither condemned nor explicitly supported the Russian attack on Ukraine, but offers diplomatic support to Moscow.

On February 24 last year, exactly one year after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Beijing published a 12-point document calling on Moscow and Kiev to hold peace talks.

China is trying to impose itself as a mediator in this conflict. However, several Western countries exclude it from this role because of its positioning as a close partner of Moscow.

China, recently accused by the US of considering supplying arms to Russia, has categorically denied any such intentions.
