The wholesale price of electricity soared in January

By Harry Floudopoulos

As the wholesale price of electricity in the first days of January showed signs of de-escalation, expectations were cultivated that there would be a recession on the front of the energy crisis.

However, in the immediate aftermath the prices jumped again, with the result that the average price in January reached 227 euros / MWh price close to the levels of December (235.38 euros / MWh) and November (228.87 euros / MWh ).

In fact, in the last ten days of January, the price even exceeded 250 euros / MWh, with the Greek market being among the most expensive in Europe and certainly more expensive than that of Italy.

For today, the wholesale price of electricity will be 237.23 euros / MWh and will move higher than markets such as Germany, Italy, France and Spain and lower than Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Hungary.

Regarding January, it should be noted that the demand for electricity recorded a significant increase to 206GWh due to the extreme weather conditions, while a significant number of lignite units were recruited to meet the needs (Agios Dimitrios 1,2,3,4 , Meliti and Megalopolis 4).

The wholesale price of electricity is expected to negatively affect prices in the retail market. Thus, it is estimated that the retail price will move to the level of 29 – 30 cents / KWh, showing a marginal decline compared to December when they stood at 30 – 31 cents / KWh.

In any case, finally, the prices in the supply market will remain at extremely high levels, a fact that leads the government to decide to re-grant a subsidy for electricity bills for the month of February without any differences in the amount that will be granted in relation to January (42 euros).
