The witch hunt continues in Turkey: And a new conviction of Demirtas

Another prison sentence for the already imprisoned former leader of the pro-Kurdish party in Turkey, Selahattin Demirtas, imposed today (28/05) a court in Ankara, as broadcast by the media of the neighboring country.

Demirtas was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months in prison, because he made statements that were deemed threatening against a prosecutor, saying that he would ask him for the “account”.

According to the television network TRT Haber and as reported by APE-MPE, Demirtas denied this accusation.

Former leader of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP), Demirtas is in prison Turkey for “terrorism” since 2016, the year in which repression against him pro-Kurdish party intensified. He faces up to 142 years in prison.

In 2018, he was sentenced to 4 years and 8 months in prison for “terrorist propaganda”.

His detention, despite repeated appeals by the European Court of Human Rights in favor of his release, has made him – for many NGOs – one of the symbols of democracy in Turkey after the failed coup against the president. Recep Tayyip Erdogan in July 2016.

For its part, Turkey accuses the HDP of being the “political showcase” of the PKK, which has been described as a “terrorist” organization by Ankara and Western countries.

The HDP rejects this accusation and declares itself a victim of repression due to its strong opposition to the Turkish president. After all, Demirtas is a man Erdogan would not want to have tangled in his legs.
