Last year, Florence Pugh posted a photo of “a different kind of Hollywood.” No more the sun-drenched bustling bubble of Los Angeles with the rolling green hills of County Wicklow, Ireland to shoot her new project, The Wonder: “Less traffic, greener hills, great Guinness,” he wrote in the caption of the image. An official trailer for the film was released last month, offering a taster, and now the film has finally arrived on Netflix.

The book is inspired by the 19th-century phenomenon of “fasting girls” and adapted from the acclaimed novel by Emma Donoghue (the author of Room, nominated for the Man Booker Prize). Donoghue collaborated with Chilean director Sebastián Lelio and Alice Birch on the film’s screenplay.

Sebastián Lelio (author of the Academy Award for A fantastic woman) is directing, while Ari Wegner(Lady Macbeth) is the cinematographer. Lelio said: Bringing the powerful novel to the screen The Wonder not only does it offer me the possibility to represent the collision between reason and faith, individual and community, obedience and rebellion, but also to explore my own interpretation of what a “period” film can be.
