The works that will change the port of Kalamata begin

In order to become a pole of local development with multiple benefits in terms of investment, job creation and increase of trade turnover at regional level but also to be the southern gateway of the mainland for trade and tourism, the utilization of the port of Kalamata enters the final straight .

The master plan of the environmental impact study for the construction of the project, the consultation of which will last until Friday, February 4, provides for the creation on the main waterfront of a berth for approximately 25 mega yacths, waterway operation, demolition of warehouses and construction of a 300 sq.m. of yachts, location of cruise service facilities, construction of a new warehouse on the southwest side, while there are forecasts for the development of water sports in the port and rainwater drainage.

It also envisages upgrading, expansion and modernization of the port building infrastructure (including the demolition of existing unsuitable buildings), the configuration of the internal road network and parking spaces as well as the configuration of the surrounding area.

At the same time, for a part of the coastal front, which concerns the area of ​​the nautical clubs, a regeneration study has been prepared entitled “Study for the regeneration of a part of the coastal zone of Kalamata”, while for the wider urban area adjacent to the port, studies have been prepared for “Regeneration” section of the coastal road Navarinou (from Faron street to Akrita) “and for the” Reconstruction of Faron road axis “.

The cost of the investment is estimated at 41.8 million euros.

The Port of Kalamata with the implementation of the projects will have significant direct and indirect positive effects on the socio-economic environment of the city, but also of the wider area.

In particular, the overall operation of the port will contribute to the development of the local economy by enhancing tourism that will occur from the modern infrastructure of the port.

Also, the construction of the port projects will have a positive contribution in the construction sector, while with the construction of the projects and the subsequent operation of the port will contribute to the creation of new jobs.

Finally, as emphasized in the study, the implementation of the final section of the pipeline “completes the flood protection of the city and cancels the problematic situation so far”, with obvious positive environmental effects on the implementation of development goals of the wider area “concerning infrastructure improvement and the support of the urban planning of the city of Kalamata “.
