One iceberg with a surface of about 4,000 sq.m. it was created in 1986 when it broke off from the Filchner Ice Shelf, then wedged itself into the floor of the Weddell Sea.
Since then it has been named A23a and remained as the largest iceberg in the worldas other larger masses of ice were “born” and then “left” in place, while this one remained stable.
At the end of last November, Piglobal news networks reported that the A23a had finally begun to move. However, its initial movement began in 2020, when it began to detach itself from the seabed.
Today it is moving and its final destination will be “iceberg cemetery”, i.e. the warmer waters that are not conducive to the creation and maintenance of such ice masses. Scientists are following its course, while also studying the effects it will bring on climate change.
