The world’s narrowest skyscraper has been completed and adds a new icon to New York’s famous Manhattan skyline. The Steinway Tower has a height-to-width ratio of 24 to 1. In other words, for every 24 meters in height, the building is 1 meter wide.
At 435 meters tall, it is also one of the tallest buildings in the Western Hemisphere, second only to two others in New York City: One World Trade Center, at 541 meters, and the Central Park Tower, at 472 meters.
The midtown Manhattan development includes 60 apartments spanning the tower’s 84 floors and the adjacent Steinway Hall building. The skyscraper is located on the corner of 11 West and 57th Street.
The tower was designed by New York-based architecture firm SHoP Architects and built by JDS Development, Property Markets Group and Spruce Capital Partners, which began construction in 2013.
Gregg Pasquarelli, director of SHoP Architects, called the building “a project of extraordinary proportions and epic grandeur” in an email to the CNN.
Super-narrow skyscrapers, also known as pencil towers, became prominent features of Hong Kong’s skyline in the 1970s. Since then, major cities like New York have followed suit.
Steinway Tower is now opening its doors to new residents. However, if the building’s silhouette is slim, its buyers’ prices certainly aren’t, as unit prices range from $7.75 million for a studio to $66 million for a penthouse.
The Steinway Tower skyscraper is a sumptuous undertaking, tapering elegantly but dramatically from its tip. At the top, the triplex penthouse overlooks Central Park.
The architects responsible for the work said the main objective was to create a bold new interpretation of the New York skyline, while also celebrating the site’s historic roots.
“Any preconceived notions our team had about New York City’s high-rise developments were replaced with an opportunity to do something that had never been done before,” said Pasquarelli.
The super tall tower is an addition to Steinway Hall, a historic 1925 building known as the former home of the Steinway and Sons piano maker and concert hall. This former cultural center has been transformed into luxury homes.
The architectural firm said it was inspired by the “golden age of Manhattan’s skyscrapers” and New York’s Art Deco history.
The tower’s facade includes terracotta blocks, a material that appears to change color and texture when viewed in different lights and from different angles.
