Kenyan Priscilla Sitieni decided to go school at the age of 94 and at the age of 99 he died according to the local media. Sami Tsepsiror’s grandson told The Standard newspaper yesterday (17/11) that Gogo Priscilla, as she was affectionately known, died at her home on Wednesday following chest complications.
“Gogo was in good health and attending her classes until three days before her death when she developed chest pains that forced her to leave school. He made us very proud,” he said.
Priscilla was 94 years old when she managed to convince the school principal of her village in the Rift Valley to accept her into his schoolaccording to UNESCO, which praised “her role as a role model for her community and beyond”.
In an interview with the United Nations agency last year, Priscilla Sitieni said her aim was to encourage young Kenyan mothers to return to school after the birth of their children, instead of dropping out.
“I wanted to set an example not only (for Kenyan girls), but also for other girls around the world who are not going to school. Without education, there is no difference between you and a chicken.”
Her route was captured in a French documentary titled Gogo, which led to her getting on a plane for the first time last year to go to France and meet first lady Brigitte Macron.
The film’s co-writer, Patrick Pesci, paid tribute to Gogo yesterday with a tweet: “In Kenya, shocked that her granddaughters don’t go to school, she enrolls in school. As an example. Her message for girls’ education remains.”
