Usually the players who enter a reality game aim for the final, however Vladislav Ivanov, a model from Russia who joined a Chinese reality show three months ago by a hasty decision, asked the public to vote for him to leave.
Ivanov worked as a translator at “Produce Camp 2021” and was asked by the producers of the show “if he would like to try a new life”, as broadcast by AMPE.
As soon as he entered the show, a competition for the members of a new men’s band, Ivanov could not leave, unless he breached his contract and paid a fine.
In the show, young musicians and performers compete with each other to finally form an 11-member band. Ivanov deliberately made bad appearances, so that the spectators reject him.
However, despite telling the spectators “do not love me, you will not have any results” with his stage name Lelush, he managed to reach the road to the final.
Fans were impressed by Ivanov’s reluctant attitude and described him as a symbol of “sang culture”, a youth movement that idealizes apathy in China and subverts the ideals of “hope, courage and dynamism”.
Several Russian bloggers have expressed their support for Ivanov in social media posts. One even wrote: “No more jokes, let Vlad go home! I am very sad and annoyed. “It may have been fun for a long time, but the situation is becoming absurd.”
Vladislav Ivanov was eventually eliminated from the final after ate a lemon in front of the camera and said he hopes people will stop supporting him. “I’m not kidding,” he added.
Blogger Raslan Usachev said the Russian player’s appearance at “Produce Camp” had raised viewership numbers.
“Suddenly a really live person appeared on this show and people started voting for him,” he said.
The reality show of education of future music idols, is a television genre that originates from South Korea with hundreds of aspiring young performers going through severe trials and seeking the votes of the public and has become very popular in China.
In this show the contestants live in dormitories on a tropical island in China’s Hainan province and their phones were confiscated for most of the time.
Anyone who wanted to break his contract and leave in the middle of the season, which started in February, had to pay a high fine.
While critics of the show question the transparency of the public vote, Ivanov appears to have hit a sensitive chord of Chinese viewers as an anti-hero.
