The first 5G networks were launched in 2019, and they are gradually gaining popularity. During the 5G Summit held at the MWC 2021 in Shanghai, Ericsson spoke about the current level of network development and prospects.
Penj Juanjiang, general manager of Ericsson’s Northeast Asia Research Center Ericsson, said there were 123 commercial 5G networks in the world as of January 2021. A total of 335 models of devices supporting fifth generation networks have been released.
The total number of 5G users in the world has exceeded 200 million, while new networks are ahead of 4G in terms of implementation speed. Ericsson estimates the number of 5G users will surpass 3.5 billion by 2026. He also added that by 2026, 5G will account for 54% of all mobile data.
2021 will certainly be a very important year for 5G expansion. We now have low-cost SoCs with 5G connectivity. We expect many affordable 5G smartphones from various brands to hit the market by the end of the year.
Current global mobile traffic is about 51 EB (exabytes) and will increase to 226 EB by 2026. At the moment, video traffic makes up 66% of the total volume of mobile traffic. By 2026, it will account for 77% of total traffic.
