A new wave of crime is spreading rapidly across the UK as theft of electric vehicle charging cables has increased in recent years, sources say. These cables are critical for electric vehicle owners who need to be charged regularly.
Thieves have targeted charging cables, which are then sold at a discounted price in the secondary market or destroyed for the large amount of copper inside such cables.
Law enforcement agencies add that the main problem in the UK used to be the theft of catalytic converters (converters). During the year, more than 10,000 such thefts were recorded. Experts believe the cost of replacing stolen charging cables could exceed the £10 million a year previously spent replacing catalytic converters.
In recent years, there has been a steady increase in sales of all-electric vehicles or hybrid models in the UK. There are currently over 400,000 of these vehicles in the UK. Charging cables up to 4.5 m long are filled with copper cables that can be sold as scrap metal. On the other hand, stolen cables can cost up to £700 to replace, with such cables costing around £200 on the secondary market.
The charging cable is stolen while charging the car or from the trunk. Therefore, it is recommended to charge your car in a safe place.
