Theodora of Greece finally marries: everything you need to know about her wedding outfit

In this early autumn, perhaps surprisingly, Theodora of Greece gave us the royal wedding that we didn’t know we needed. Until some time ago we didn’t have much news about the princess, daughter of King Constantine and Queen Anna Maria, except perhaps the most curious one.

The royal had been part of the cast of Beautiful under the name of Theodora Greece and from 2011 to 2018 she played the role of Alison Montgomery, Bill Spencer Jr.’s secretary. She left the soap practically coinciding with the announcement of her wedding with the lawyer Matthew Kumarwe waited six years before seeing Theodora of Greece finally get married after two postponements, one due to the pandemic and one due to the death of King Constantine.

Although related to the royal houses of half of Europe, she was not a great date-goer royalso trying to get her tastes right on the wedding day was a difficult bet to win. It may be because of that aura of mystery that hovered over the princess and it may be because, let’s admit it, we are never satisfied with royal weddings, we were all speechless when we saw the first shots on the steps of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. Let’s see the details.

Thanks to the wedding, we discover that Theodora of Greece harbors a romantic soul inside, at least judging by the sumptuous wedding dress that the Greek designer Celia Kritharioti he designed for her. The lace dress is floaty and richly embroidered with the addition of crystals. What characterizes it is the “Bardot” neckline, a choice that falls singularly on the ninetieth birthday of the actress who gave her name to the style detail, emphasized by an organza lapel that opens on the back leaving it slightly uncovered.

The veil, perfectly preserved, has a long history dating back to 1905 which began with Margaret of Connaughtgranddaughter of Queen Victoria, who married in 1905 Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. Passing away in 1920, the royal never became sovereign but the heirloom later passed to her daughter Ingrid of Sweden who showed it off for her wedding to Frederik IX of Denmark.

The current Queen married the then Prince Frederik exactly 20 years ago in an Uffe Frank creation, sewn by Birgit Hallstein. On her head she wore a tiara given by her in-laws and a veil worn by Danish royalty. The most expensive jewel, however, was not visible to the eyes

From that moment on, including the veil in the wedding outfit became a family custom, so much so that the three daughters of the Danish royals wore it, Anna Maria of Greecefrom Margrethe IIfrom his sister Benedikte and subsequent generations. She also had the honor of the veil Mary Donaldson on the occasion of her wedding to FrederikMargrethe’s firstborn. Theodora of Greece is only the last on the list: before her, her cousin, Princess Alexandra zu Zayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, daughter of Benedikte of Denmark, and her sister Alexia of Greece had the same privilege.

When we tried to guess which tiara the princess would wearamong all the tiaras, two were to be considered the most eligible for Theodora’s big day. In the end, discarded theAntique Corsage Tiarathe tiara won of the Khedive of Egypt. The tiara is not only beautiful and precious but it tells a story the great love between Anna Maria and Constantine of Greece. The royal’s parents got married in that same cathedral on September 18, 1964 and the very young Danish princess had that very jewel on her head.

In 1964 the wedding between the Danish princess and King Constantine took place. The dress with a six-metre train remained closed in a suitcase for decades: it is testimony to a great love but also tells of the exile into which the royal family was forced

The path is similar to that of the veil. This tiara also originally belonged to alla Princess Margaret of Connaught. It was the wedding gift of Abbas II (the viceroy as we can translate the title khedive) meant for King Edward VII’s granddaughter. As we know, Margaret died in 1920 before becoming queen. The tiara was inherited by her daughter Ingrid who did not use this piece for her wedding and subsequently passed to Anna Maria, its main wearer.

The tiara has been the protagonist of numerous royal wedding. They wore it Margrethe II of Denmarkher sister Benedikte, the latter’s daughters Alexandra and Nathalie of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Alexia of Greece, eldest daughter of Anna Maria and Constantine. Now the tiara bears witness to another love, that of Theodora of Greece and Matthew Kumar. A story that begins right where the very long union of Anna Maria and Costantino began sixty years ago.
