Therapeutic communities are prohibited from admitting children and adolescents

The National Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (Conanda) published a resolution that prohibits the internment of children and adolescents in therapeutic communities in the Official Gazette of the Union, this Friday (12).

The body is linked to the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship. The determination is valid from the moment of its publication.

According to the publication, only adults will be able to be admitted to these communities, which are non-profit entities that aim to accommodate people with disorders resulting from drug addiction.

The resolution also addresses the care, treatment and monitoring of young people in these communities.

For children and adolescents who are already detained, the executive branch must identify them and develop a plan to remove the young people and guarantee their rights.

Conanda also noted that, for cases of emergency care, reception must take place in Psychosocial Care Centers (Caps), in hospitals or in Child and Youth Health Reception Units (Uais), on a temporary basis.

For the council, comprehensive care for children and adolescents with mental health needs must be based on the implementation of public policies for social protection and the promotion of human rights, carried out in an anti-asylum manner,

Furthermore, it is necessary to ensure the maintenance of family and community ties, offered by the SUS, by protective spaces of the SUAS and by the intersectoral network.
