There are increases in taxi fares

By Fotis Fotinos

More visible than ever is the possibility of increases in taxi fares, following the explosive rise in fuel prices. Taxi owners are “pushing” for significant price increases, as – as they claim – they do not “go out”.

Recently, the discussions and negotiations between POIATA and SATA have intensified with the Ministry of Transport, which is called to take the relevant decision, in consultation with the Ministry of Finance.

It seems that the possibility of price increases in taxi fares gathers several possibilities and it now remains to specify the amount and the categories that will be implemented.

“Where the fuel has reached, the profession is not viable. Measures are required from the State”, say the taxi owners, reminding that they come from a very difficult two years (2020-21), which was characterized by a significant reduction of the transport project, due to the pandemic.

“The increases are a one-way street,” say taxi owners

A few days ago, the Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA) sent a letter to the Ministry of Transport, requesting the implementation of immediate measures.
The taxi owners, after listing in the letter the difficulties they face from the increase in the price of fuel, asked the following:

– Direct financial support of 300 euros per vehicle / month for the duration of the energy crisis.

– Reduction of VAT on fuels from 24% to 13% for the duration of the energy crisis.

– Reduction of the VAT from 0.7 euros / liter to 0.5 euros / liter.

The professional motorists claimed in the letter that “if they do not adopt the above measures”, the increases in tariffs / fares are “one way”.

The federations of the sector have also submitted specific proposals, from which the proposal to increase the flag drop to 2.5 euros, the single tariff to 0.82 euros and the minimum route to 4 euros stands out.

It is noted that the last increase in taxi fares was given several years ago, so many organizations consider “reasonable” the demands of motorists.

On the other hand, the attitude of the passenger public is expected with interest, which notes a decrease in purchasing power, due to inflationary pressures.

In general, the rise in fuel prices has caused intense concern in the entire transport sector, from trucks to courier companies, causing price increases.
