There are “no dates yet” for Hamas negotiators to return to Cairo to resume negotiations on a ceasefire in exchange for the release of hostages, a member of the Hamas political bureau told CNN this Sunday (11).
“There is nothing new,” Hossam Badran told CNN saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refuses to respond to fair Palestinian demands regarding basic needs in Gaza.
He listed “stopping the killing, evacuation, providing relief and the return of illegitimately displaced people” as factors to be considered.
A Hamas delegation left Cairo on March 7 after days of negotiations without an obvious breakthrough.
Negotiators had hoped to have a draft agreement this week after days of meetings in Cairo, “but that’s not going to happen,” said a diplomat familiar with the discussions who described the final days of talks as “very hectic.”
Egyptian state news agency Al Qahera, citing a senior source, said the delegation had left to consult on the proposals, adding that negotiations would resume this week.
Israel has warned that if Israeli hostages held in Gaza are not home by Ramadan, it will launch a military offensive on Rafah in southern Gaza, where some 1.5 million Palestinians are trying to seek safety from the fighting.
