There are points with a very dangerous risk of fire in all regions of the country, says Inmet

All regions of Brazil have “extremely dangerous” risk points for fires, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

To establish the degree of danger, the institute uses a flammability index, which analyzes risk conditions and enables the adoption of preventive measures in the regions.

The indicator calculates the possibility of fire based on the humidity, temperature, dew point and wind conditions of a specific location.

Inmet divides the risk levels into five levels:

  • none;
  • weak;
  • average;
  • big;
  • and very dangerous.

In total, stations in 25 states and the Federal District indicate a “very dangerous” risk of fires. There are no measurements in Roraima. The consultation was made with data updated until 10 pm on Saturday (14).

Only in Rio Grande do Sul is there a predominance of points with little or no risk of forest fires.

According to the BDQueimadas program of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Brazil has 6,251 active fire outbreaks.

Pará leads the country with the most ongoing incidents.

See the five states with the most occurrences:

  • To: 1,765
  • Mato Grosso: 1,150
  • Tocantins: 637
  • Amazonas: 540
  • Acre: 444

The institute’s platform also indicates the total area burned in Brazil in 2024, up until August. The country has already had more than 224 thousand km² destroyed this year.
