Or index of unemployment, which fell to 12.6% in the quarter through September, released by Continuous Pnad this Tuesday (30) should be celebrated, according to economist Renato Veloni.
In an interview with CNN Radio, he reckons that last year was very complex around the world because of the pandemic. “GDP fell 4% and recovered 4% this year. Unemployment was at 12% pre-pandemic and is now falling. The expectation is to fall even more”.
Even so, Veloni points out that informality is a negative issue in the data. “Most of the reduction in unemployment is due to informality, there is still a very high rate of underutilization of employment (…). What is growing is a job that is still precarious”.
According to the macroeconomics professor at Ibmec in São Paulo, for the index to fall below the 12% level, “the hole is lower”.
“We will need to have expectations of growth in Brazil, with reforms, a calmer political-social situation, so that it breaks the 12% unemployment level and stays in a better situation,” he said.
Veloni sees a level between 6% and 8% as good, “but we are far from that, you can’t count on that in the short term or in the next two years.”
