Grab your calendar and mark your appointments sky of 2023. Month by month there are shooting stars, supermoons, eclipses and even a particularly bright comet in February. The first date is just a few days away.
January 4th
Early in the year is the peak of the meteor shower Quadrantids. Between 60 and 200 meteors per hour to watch in the morning between sunset, almost full, and sunrise.
February 1st
There comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will reach the point of its orbit closest to the Earth. This is therefore the best day to see it at its best, even with binoculars. It has already been in the sky since January 12th.
April 20th
You can observe a rare total-annular hybrid solar eclipse. What is it? The Italian amateur astronomers explain it: an eclipse that changes its appearance as the shadow of the Moon moves over the earth’s surface. The problem is that it will be seen in Australia, Indonesia and in the eastern part of the island of Timor. A penumbral lunar eclipse will occur on May 5, visible from Asia, Australia and the easternmost regions of Europe and Africa.
May 17th
Lunar occultation is a rare phenomenon that is also seen in Europe. The lunar disk passes in front of Jupiter and hides it for over an hour.
August 13th
The period is the classic one of the night of San Lorenzo. The best night of the Perseid meteor shower is August 13, two days before the new moon: up to 100 meteors per hour.
August 31st
There is the largest full moon of 2023, the closest to the Earth. It will be a Blue Moon or the second full Moon in a month. Three more supermoons: 3 July, 1 August, 29 September.
October 14th
The annular solar eclipse can be observed in the American continent: the part of the solar disk not covered by the Moon is the ring of fire.
December 14th
The geminids fill the winter sky: up to 150 meteors of different colors in one hour. This spectacle can be seen from both hemispheres.
