The mayor of Recife, João Campos (Republicans), spoke to the CNN about the expectation for this Carnival, which for him will be “the greatest in history”, with predictions of breaking attendance and performance records.
“The accumulated expectation after two years without Carnival in Brazil will make a difference”, he said. “There is an accumulated will. We feel it in the streets, in pre-Carnival, in block rehearsals.”
He also mentioned the biggest Carnaval group in the world, which is from Pernambuco: Galo da Madrugada. The assembly of the “Galo Ancestral” on the Duarte Coelho bridge should be ready this Friday (17).
Campos points out that Galo’s message is one of respect. “There is no room for hate, intolerance or segregation, there is room for love, acceptance and respect for differences.”
The mayor also spoke about the importance of security, “a central point for the functioning of Carnival”.
“Recife’s street Carnival is made with people and by people. It is not just the role of the police to provide security, it is also the role of revelers to play calmly and respectfully.”
