Tensions in the Middle East increase following Iran’s attack on Israel, revealing an internal dichotomy in the Iranian government. Priscila Caneparo, PhD in International Law and university professor, analyzes the situation.
According to the expert, there is a clear divergence between the Iranian president’s statements and those of the supreme religious leader, Ali Khamenei.
“The Iranian president is saying that Iran does not want to get involved in a war yet. On the other hand, the supreme religious leader Khamenei is already saying that Iran will effectively win this war”, explains Caneparo.
Escalation of conflict and international involvement
The professor highlights that Israel may have provoked Iran by violating UN resolutions and invading territories beyond the Gaza Strip. “Israel almost begged to drag Iran into this war,” he says.
She warns of the risk of a regional conflict turning into a global one, with the possible involvement of the United States and Western allies, while Iran has the support of Russia.
Caneparo also highlights the concern about the “decadence of international multilateral institutions”. Despite calls from the UN Security Council for a ceasefire, both Israel and Iran appear to ignore these resolutions.
Future prospects and risks
The expert warns of the dangers of an abrupt and profound Israeli response, which could lead Iran to use all its military force.
“We are in an escalation that we cannot see a way out of,” concludes Caneparo, highlighting the complexity and risks of the current situation in the Middle East.
