There is a long way to go for the inclusion of neurodiverse students in schools, says pedagogue

Brazil has approximately 2 million people on the autistic spectrum and, last June 18, the autistic pride day was celebrated.

A CNN Radio on CNN Educação, pedagogue and psychologist Solange Aroeira stated that there is a “long road” to be covered for the inclusion of autistic students in schools.

She explained that this inclusion is very important and brings benefits to all students.

“We work on developing social skills, encouraging empathy and understanding, in addition to preparing for adult life,” he said.

According to the specialist, “we are in a phase of understanding what inclusion really is and what it means to deal with human and neurological diversity.”

She points out that “we don’t have ready-made answers for that.”

Anyway, Solange sees many challenges, such as communicating with autistic students, which follows the particularities of each person.

At the same time, the pedagogue believes that “one should have a focused look at what should be done at school.”

“Teachers must leave the role of classroom authority and must become a facilitator for these children”, he said.

For this, she points out the need to collaborate with specialists and seek knowledge, to “consider that adaptations have to be fair and accessible”.
