There is a trivialization of the death of black people, says Thiago Amparo

O CNN Our World this Friday (11) interviewed Thiago Amparo, lawyer and professor of human rights at Fundação Getúlio Vargas, to talk about racism and xenophobia.

For Amparo, the murder of Congolese Moïse in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, and the murder of a black man at the door of his house by his neighbor, a naval sergeant, who alleges having confused him with a robber, expose the trivialization of the lives of black people in the country.

“These two cases (Durval and Moise) convey the message of a high degree of dehumanization of the victim,” he said.

It is a society (the Brazilian one) that sees itself as cordial, in the affectionate and peaceful sense, but hides a lot of violence historically.

Amparo highlighted how the case of Moïse shows not only hatred towards black people, but also hatred towards immigrants.

“Black refugees and immigrants suffer double discrimination, not only because of their origin, but also because of their race and color,” he said.

Prejudice

The professor also highlighted the way in which blacks are treated in society, despite the discourse of equality widely defended.

We are biologically equal, but when we look at it socially, we are treated very unequally racially.
