There is greater awareness that racism is not just a problem for black people, says journalist

Brazil has advanced a little in raising awareness of racism in the country, assesses journalist and CEO of Raça magazine, Maurício Pestana, in an interview with CNN this Saturday (20th), Black Consciousness Day.

“What I notice is that there is a greater movement of society and white people as well. Until recently, it seemed that this was a black problem, we heard it was ‘mimimi’. Today there is an increasing number of white people who understand that this is not a black problem, and that black people alone will not solve it, it is a problem for Brazil. We are moving towards what happened in the United States, where there is movement in society to combat racism”, he assesses.

“It is a greater awareness that it is not a black problem. In Brazil, ten years ago, a significant portion of the population thought that this did not exist, that it was something outside. Brazil did not assume that it was a real racist country, except for the people who had the specific information. Today, there is a very large strata of Brazilian society that is aware”, he adds.

Pestana defends that it is necessary “to have firmer, stronger policies, and with great attention to this community that has been neglected in this country for centuries”. “When you see a boy at the light, your doorman, your employee is black and in a vulnerable situation, you have to understand that this is part of a system, and you have to work to change it, be part of the solution.”
