Delegate Camila Lourenço, from the Leblon police station, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, said that she has no doubt that the German consul Uwe Herbert Hahn, 61, was responsible for the death of her husband, the Belgian Walter Henry Maximillen. Biot, 52, last Friday (5).
According to the investigation, the victim was killed by a beating on the penthouse where the couple lived, in Ipanema, also in the South Zone.
This Monday (8), the delegate heard the day worker who took care of the couple’s apartment, as well as a friend of the family. The expectation is that these hearings can clarify what their relationship was like and the motivation for the crime.
“It is necessary to analyze the couple’s history, the background, to know if there was a case of domestic violence, if the victim was assaulted, hence the need to hear witnesses. These are circumstances that will interfere with the dosimetry of the penalty. We will refine the investigation to ascertain the circumstances”, said the delegate.
The expertise carried out by the Civil Police also pointed out that the victim had marks of recent and old aggressions on the body. He had been under attack for at least two days. A baton and an air conditioning hose were seized, materials that may have been used for the beating.
According to the delegate, initially the consul claimed that her husband had suffered a fall and hit his head, but several injuries contradicted this version.
“The various injuries spread over different parts of the body, and some quite peculiar, suggest that there was indeed a beating. We are facing an intentional crime against life”, added Camila Lourenço.
The delegate also said that the consul would have made it difficult for the police to work on the penthouse, placing furniture behind the door of one of the rooms to prevent the entry of agents. Also, he would have tried to clean up the crime scene. A secretary of his, who has already testified, confirmed that she cleaned up some of the blood.
“The apartment was in complete disarray, quite dirty, with feces and blood scattered throughout the property, especially in the bedroom. There was a sofa with a damp stain on the side suggesting as if someone had hastily cleaned the area in an attempt to hide something. In a second moment, a research was carried out with the luminol reagent. The experts identified blood on the pillowcase, on the floor, in various parts of the property, and in the bathroom”, concluded Camila.
Investigators are still waiting for the consul’s and the victim’s cell phones to be breached in order to analyze the contents of the devices, which were seized to help with investigations.
On the afternoon of this Sunday (07), Hahn’s arrest was converted into preventive custody after he went through a custody hearing. The decision is made by Judge Rafael de Almeida Rezende, from the Custody Hearing Center in Benfica, in the North Zone of the capital.
Uwe Herbert’s defense has called for a release from prison, claiming he has consular immunity. Despite this, the Justice understood that the benefit does not apply to the case, as it is an episode outside the consular environment and without any relation to the functions performed by him.
In addition, the magistrate understands that it is important to keep the consul in prison, in order to avoid jeopardizing the collection of evidence and to ensure that there is no escape.
