There is no prediction for outcome and war in Ukraine could last for years, says professor

“There is no prediction of an outcome for the conflict between Russia and Ukraine”, according to the professor of international relations at FESPSP, Bernardo Wahl.

In an interview with CNN Radio he assessed that neither Russia nor Ukraine intend to give in at this point in the war.

“For the Kremlin, Ukraine is a strategic interest, while for Ukraine it is an existential war, it wants to guarantee its survival,” he said.

A key point, according to the professor, is the “willingness of Western countries to continue supporting Ukraine, sending weapons” and there is already “evidence that shows divisions.”

“It’s a war that can last for years,” he added.

From the point of view of the conflict itself, Bernardo Wahl argues that, from the Russian point of view, the Kremlin “needs to maintain the military presence and attack the Ukrainian infrastructure, there is no need to take the capital Kiev.”

“But the roots of the war come from the United States, which has disregarded Moscow for the last 30 years. Russia is in an armed conflict with Ukraine, but geopolitically it is a war against the West.”

An agreement, in this way, “is only possible with an agreement between Russia and the West or a collapse of the regime of Vladimir Putin.”

While Ukraine seeks membership of the European Union, Wahl points out that membership “is not universally welcome” within the bloc.

There is support from Germany, France and Italy, but “Europe is divided over the country’s rapid entry”.
