Brazil’s ambassador to Egypt, Paulino de Carvalho Neto, told CNN this Monday (30) there is no “very short term” forecast for the departure of the 34 Brazilians from the Gaza Strip.
“You can’t predict when it will be. This is not expected to happen anytime soon. There is no deadline set for them to leave. There is no prediction in the very short term that they will be removed from there. Today there is no way to remove them,” she said.
According to him, despite the difficulty, the operation is mounted. “Our priority is this withdrawal, but there is still no understanding between Egypt, Israel and the de facto authorities in Gaza for this to happen. From our side, everything is ready. Hired transport, people who go to the border to receive them”.
Asked why Egypt resists opening the border, he said there is fear of terrorists entering the Sinai region. “It is a sensitive region. I myself tried to get to the border twice, but everything is blocked. The border region is super controlled, it always has been, as there have always been pockets of insurrection,” he stated.
In the ambassador’s opinion, the departure of Brazilians and other foreigners from Gaza will be possible when there is a single package of negotiations that involves Israel, Egypt and the Gaza authorities within the perspective of a ceasefire.
“I believe the eventual exit will take place within a single package that involves the interests of everyone involved in the conflict, mainly between Israelis and Palestinians,” he added.
