There is still no treatment for Covid-19, says professor of infectology

With more than two years of the pandemic, the medical community still has no answers about the long Covid – people who, even after overcoming the infection, continue with symptoms indefinitely.

In an interview with CNN RadioProfessor of Infectious Diseases at Uni-FTC Salvador and Consultant to the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases, Antônio Bandeira, reported that he receives patients without smell and taste for two years.

“The treatment of long-term Covid today, in daily medical practice, we are working with each individual and seeking to add knowledge, in the world there are centers studying this, with different syndromes”, he said.

Symptoms include lung problems, depression, memory loss, chronic tiredness and sleep disturbances.

“What happens is that we try to create an integration network to refer patients, first we need to exclude and look for causes with identifiable objectives, with lung injury, in relation to sleep disorders, we need to investigate further.”

“At the limit, we treat what we can, loss of smell is very serious and there has been absolutely no type of therapy for it, I have patients with 2 years without smell, we have nothing to do”, he said.

According to Antônio Bandeira, the type of variant of the coronavirus is not related to more or less symptoms of long-term Covid.

However, he highlights that “vaccination has changed the clinical behavior of the disease”: “We have far fewer people losing their sense of smell than we had in 2020, for example.”
