There was a lot of panic when smoke invaded the subway car in NY, says witness

An eyewitness who said he was in the subway car where the shooting took place in Brooklyn, USA, described the chaos at the scene, saying he saw a lot of blood on the floor and that the shots sounded like fireworks.

The subway conductor said the train was delayed due to train traffic minutes before the train reached the 36th Street platform in Sunset Park, according to Yav Montano, and that was when smoke suddenly engulfed the car.

He then heard “what I thought was fireworks, but now hearing it was gunfire and I’m grateful that I hid behind one of the chairs. Honestly, I have no words for what I experienced.”

“I was in front of the third car and it all happened in the back of the same car… As soon as the smoke, like, ignited, it started to engulf everything. People started migrating to the front of the car,” he told CNN.

Several people were found shot, following a call for a smoke condition at the 36th Street and 4th Avenue subway station at approximately 8:30 am Tuesday, according to the New York City Fire Department.

The New York City Police Department said there were no explosive devices active “at the moment” at the subway station, where several people were shot. “Several unexploded devices” were previously found, according to the FDNY.

Montano said a motorcyclist tried to open the car door connected to a separate car, but was unable to open it.

“There was blood on the floor. There was a lot of blood running on the floor. And at the time, I didn’t think it was a gunfight because it looked like fireworks. All I saw was people stomping each other, running over each other, trying to get in the door that was locked and a lot of panic, but luckily, the train quickly moved to the next stop and everyone got off the train in a hurry,” he said. .

He had a mask on the train but could no longer wear it because it was “black with smoke”.

He estimated that around 40 to 50 people were in the subway car with him. Montano said he tried to hide and make room for an elderly woman near him. She “even handed me her little pepper spray from her purse just in case something happened. She gave it to me from her purse and said to use it just in case,” he said.

He recorded a short video, but a man next to him advised him to put the phone away. Montano said he is now working in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
