There was no exchange of accusations with the federal government, says governor of Pernambuco

In an interview with CNN This Tuesday (31), the governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara (PSB), denied that there had been any exchanges of accusations between the State and the federal government, given the tragedy caused by the heavy rains that hit the region.

“There was no exchange of accusations on our part with the federal government. On the contrary, on Saturday we immediately requested support from the Brazilian Army and, immediately, we were attended to,” he said.

On Monday (30), Jair Bolsonaro (PL) flew over the areas affected by the storms and held a press conference. The president even stated that his government “is always alert to assist the population, in any situation, regardless of the request of local authorities”.

THE CNN Câmara stated that Pernambuco will “look for the federal government whenever necessary, as we do, but the clash comes from an issue and a political act that the president did when he arrived here”.

According to the governor, Bolsonaro’s visit would not have been officially communicated.

The storms that hit the state have so far left 106 dead, more than 6,000 homeless and 41 municipalities affected in some way, according to the governor.

“We are now concentrated at six points, in Jaboatão and Recife, in the search for these disappeared. We will stop at nothing until we find all the missing persons.”

Regarding the factors that led to the calamity, Câmara did not deny the responsibility of the authorities.

“In a tragedy like this, of course, we all have a responsibility. The Public Power has to assume, yes, its responsibilities. We had an extraordinary rain, a rain that was greater than any monthly average in the month of May in the historical series. However, there is evidently an urban disorder in several cities in Pernambuco, in Brazil as well,” he said.
