Mayor of Rio de Janeiro and candidate for re-election, Eduardo Paes (PSD) stated that he intends to make the drug Ozempic – which is used for weight loss and combating diabetes – available in the city’s public health network.
The mayor’s statement was given in an interview with the newspaper “Extra”, published this Tuesday (1st).
“Rio will be a city that will no longer have chubby people, everyone will take Ozempic at family clinics”, said the mayor, saying that he has already taken the medication. He claimed to have lost 30 kilos with the medicine.
“I took a lot of Ozempic, that medicine that is reducing everyone’s weight. It will have the patent open next year, it will be able to have the generic and I will put it on the entire public network”, he added.
He highlighted, however, that his government’s concern with the inclusion of this medicine in the list of substances available for free is not with aesthetics. “The concern is not aesthetic, it is health. I went for a blood test the other day and all my rates went down. I didn’t have to put down my beer.”
Currently, the price of Ozempic is around R$1,100 on the private network, for a dosage of 1 mg. One box is enough for four applications.
What is Ozempic
Ozempic is composed of the substance semaglutide, a drug from the GLP-1 hormone analogue class. It also acts on the secretion of insulin by the pancreas, regulating blood glucose and also promoting a reduction in appetite, as explained by endocrinologist Lorena Lima Amato.
Among the possible side effects of using Ozempic, according to experts, are:
- Nausea;
- Excessive lack of appetite;
- Diarrhea;
- Vomiting;
- Malaise;
- Headache;
- Difficulty eating;
- Dehydration (due to vomiting and diarrhea);
- Gallstones, due to rapid weight loss.
