There’s still time to get organized for Carnival, says São Paulo’s Health Secretary

The municipal secretary of Health of São Paulo, Edson Aparecido, said, this Wednesday (1st), in an interview with CNN, it is still too early to make any decision regarding Carnival, which takes place from the end of February, with the advancement of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus.

“We are going to base ourselves, as we always have, on the studies of Health Surveillance. The study by the city’s Epidemiological Surveillance is ready at the end of the week, and it will dictate exactly the decision regarding the issue of New Year’s Eve. Carnival is in three months. There is still a lot of time to get organized”, declared Aparecido.

The state of São Paulo confirmed this Wednesday the third case of the Ômicron variant. According to authorities, the passenger arrived at Guarulhos airport, in the metropolitan region, last Saturday (27), from Ethiopia.

“He is vaccinated with two doses of Pfizer’s immunizing agent. In home isolation since last Saturday, with no symptoms and being monitored by the surveillance of the city of Guarulhos, where he resides”, said the State Secretariat in a statement.

According to Aparecido, “when it comes to the epidemiological issue, 15 days is almost an eternity”. He also explained that the city got better decisions than the state government.

“São Paulo, in fact, almost always had much more restrictive measures than the state. The state, for example, released the recommendation to wear a mask as of December 11th. The municipality did not do this.”

The state government informed, on November 30, that it will re-evaluate the rules on the use of masks in open spaces as of December 11th.

“Our parameter has always been the epidemiological scenario in São Paulo. And, therefore, we need to know the impact of the new variant with the flexibility of using masks in open spaces. It is necessary to be cautious and evaluate this new element. Our commitment is to the health of the population”, said Governor João Doria (PSDB).
